If you have decided to buy a second-hand car you must register the transfer of ownership within 60 days of signing the act of sale.

To do this you can go to an ACI agency, your local Motorizzazione Civile or to an authorised agency (Agenzia di pratiche Automobilistiche). To find your nearest agency look under Pratiche Automobilistiche listings in the Pagine Gialle, the Italian yellow pages, or go to:

The documents needed to transfer ownership of your second-hand car are:

• Act of sale
• Certificato di Proprietà (Vehicle ownership document)
• Photocopy of Carta / libretto di circolazione (Car Registration Certificate)
• Photocopy of some form of identification
• Residence certificate
• Codice fiscale

Fees due are a fixed sum (roughly €74) plus a tax, which varies depending on the province and type of vehicle, called imposta provinciale di trascrizione.
